Abstract
Purpose: Since 2000, mumps outbreaks have been reported in countries with high two-dose coverage of mumps vaccine, specifically in Korea. Therefore, the author reviewed the hypotheses that have been suggested to manage and prevent the national trend.
Methods: The author searched and analyzed the literature related to the trend of a mumps outbreak among Korean adolescents.
Results: The hypotheses could be summarized as three categories ? vaccine failure, the cohort effect of Rubini strain vaccines, and other factors than the actual occurrence. However, these hypotheses are still insufficient to explain the for the national mumps outbreaks.
Conclusion: It is necessary to study the analytical observational studies as well as the laboratory and clinical studies.
